In Loving memory of Merton Dalbert “Pappy“ MacDonald
The world grew a little quieter on May 17 2026, when Merton MacDonald passed at the age of 87. A man whose presence filled every room. Mert’s home was always a place of welcome – his table somehow always had room for one more, and his gatherings were legendary for their laughter and generosity.
We take comfort in knowing he is reunited with his large MacDonald family: his parents, John Hugh and Evelyn Gladys (Findlay), and his eight siblings – Barbara Livingstone (Doug), Isabel Mosher (Charlie), Donald (Emily), Kay Rasmussen (Flemming), Jimmy (Shirley), Johnny, George (Madeleine), and Alfred (Brenda) – who no doubt have a feast and a card game waiting for him. He will be missed by his brother, Raymond.
Merton is once again with his beloved wife of 56 years – Phyllis Margaret, his lifelong dance and travel companion. Colin and Craig Angus, his brothers-in-law, will feel the absence of the moments they spent together.
Mert leaves his cherished daughters, Sherrill MacDonald-Ranger (Roch) and Allison MacDonald-Wilson (David), to watch over the Harrington cottage he adored. Grandpa (Gramps) will be deeply missed by Jordan and Megan Ranger and Zoe and Lily Wilson who will carry on his favourite summer rituals of tending to the hummingbirds and watering the garden.
Pappy’s life was woven into the fabric of the Laurentians community. He had a remarkable 50 year career in the auto industry, best known as “Mr. Toyota“ a title earned through hard work, honesty, and a personality impossible to forget. His community work with the Shriners, MS golf tournaments, and the Brownsburg Curling Club reflected his belief in giving more than he took. An avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, and storyteller. Mert built lifelong and new friendships – many of whom are waiting for him with a scotch on the rocks.
He leaves behind a few wishes for the MacDonald and Angus clans: continue gathering, keep laughing, and above all support one another.
A celebration of his life will take place at Shaw Cemetery on July 4 2026, at 1:00 p.m. with a luncheon to follow at the Harrington Community Centre. Please bring your dancing shoes, be ready to share a story, and come prepared to share tears but also lots of laughs.
